Star Travel References
« on: 08/05-16:33 »

Here's some technical reference data for those who like to consider the science when writing science fiction.

Earth Orbital Heights
Lunar orbit mean from earth center = 385,000 km (239,000 mi)
Lunar orbit avg. perigee = 362,600 km (225,300 mi)
Lunar orbit avg. apogee = 405,400 km (251,900 mi)
Geostationary orbit from Earth's surface = 35,786 kilometers (22,236 mi)
High orbit = 35,790 kilometers (22,239 miles) out
   Medium orbit = 1,200 to 35,792 kilometers (746 to 22,240 miles)
   Low orbits = 200 to 1200 kilometers (124 to 746 miles)

* = Offset and Throw are references to star drive types.

Offset Drive = A mass effect offset drive, which does the same thing to the mass of the ship as if it was being influenced by a large mass. It electromagnetically accelerates IONs to create a field that compresses the ship just like it would if it was moving near the speed of light. Dampening one side of the field generates an offset in one direction. Effectively it would be the same as if the ship were falling in a very large gravity well.

Throw Drive = Throws the pattern of the ship at faster then light speeds because it has no mass. In some science fiction stories it might be considered a form of skip drive.
