Doing short story critiques
« on: 10/03-07:51 »

When doing short story critiques, it is best to read the entire story first before trying to provide exact details of your analysis or summary of your opinion. We suggest you read the review guidelines to give you some idea what the purpose of the exercise is. Our goal is to help each other improve our writing skills. That means being honest without discouraging people. No matter how bad a piece of work may be doesnít mean someone canít learn to do better.

If you thing the piece is too long for you to give a detailed review just provide what you can as far as a critique. Try and do a little better then "looks ok to me". Pick out weak spots and try to provide ways to improve. Examples are always helpful. Don't try to tell them how to write it just provide some guidance to what you trying to get across.

For those being critiqued keep several things in mind. No one writes so good they can't improve so take all points as suggestions not criticisms.  You can't get better if you aren't willing to hear what needs improvement. We all sink as writers until we don't stink. Accept that and than work hard to not stink. Even best selling authors say their works stinks on the first couple drafts. They have to work real hard editing and rewriting to not stink. So except that as fact, that everything you write, at first will stink. What's nice is you've got people here willing to help you not stink when you need them.

:rolmao I'm sorry but I find it funny. You stink until you don't. It's the truth but it's funny.
