Amazon's new WriteOn service
« on: 09/03-01:58 »

Amazon has recently launched a new program entitled WriteOn. The service allows Authors to put up their work in progress for comments and feedback by members. A brief look at the site generates a few questions. There does not seem to be a limit on who, or the number of people allowed to read a work in progress.

It would seem likely that the fans of a given author could just read the books from the service rather than buy them. For beginners writing their first book the service could provide them valuable feedback but for an established author, participation could be problematic.

It would be useful to know how sales of new books were affected if an established author used the service to help develop their work.

Has anyone used this service before?

Just curious.

I've been looking into it, participating in a couple of the boards and reading a number of stories. Overall I was rather disappointed in most of the stories and the nature of the discussion on the forums. A lot of beginners. Some of them do have some potential but need direction but there is just too many to deal with. You'd end up doing nothing else once you started.

If they would break it down into writing groups of five or six people they might make some head way but when you have numerous people giving sometimes conflicting or ineffectual advice it makes it difficult for authors to know what direction they need to move. I like that character or it sounds good, isn't a lot of help. Nor is getting comments every time they post a new paragraph.

They do have published authors and editors post general advice on one board that does seem helpful but other than that I'm not sure how much good the authors are actually getting from it. Most might be better off just spending their time writing.

Another separate service they have is 'Kindle Scout'. Members vote on what books they think are worth publishing. Those selected are paid an advance. They publish e-book and hard copy versions of those selected. Amazon staff review winners and do the final selection from what people say. Requires an exclusive deal on the book for a fixed period of time with an option to renew. If it doesn't sell, or it's not picked, you're free to shop around or do it yourself from there.

The big plus is they promote the books selected. They have to be never before published works and I suspect books in an existing series wouldn't qualify. It might be something to think about once you're done with your current series and start something new.

I think I'm okay for the moment although its certainly something to keep an eye on for the future.  However it might be something my brother might want to take a run at.

Thanks for the link!

The story submissions I found when I was looking around didn't impress me. A lot of urban legend, Gothic or some other dark version of a genre. Almost everything I read needed a lot of work but of course I've gotten picky in my old age. I suspect it will get better over time but it might take a while.
