Under the Tuscan Sun
« on: 06/01-09:11 »

Review of the movie Under the Tuscan Sun starring Diane Lane, a movie of discover and romance that will leave you glad to be alive.

DVD Title Under the Tuscan Sun
Stars: Diane Lane, Raoul Bova, Sandra Oh, Lindsay Duncan, Vincent Riotta
Genre: Romance - Self Dicovery
Writer: Deric Audrey Wells, Frances Mayes
Director: Audrey Wells
Producers: Audrey Wells, Edoardo Petti, Jon Goldman, Katie DiMento, Laura Fattori

Yes, to many itís another chic flick but I love this movie. This is a story about starting all over again, going through one mishap after another, not knowing how will turn out yet coming out whole on the other side. What often we see as little disasters giving us something unexpected in return. This is a heart warming funny and inspirational film you canít help but enjoy. Diane Lane plays the part superbly. From lonely terror of a thunderstorm to the exuberance of a new love her performance was brilliant. She seems to put her heart and soul in every scene.

This is the story about a women who thinks sheís lost everything when she finds out how unfaithful her husband is. On a last minute trip to Italy given to her by a friend who couldnít go, she finds a fascination with the charm of Tuscany. On a whim she buys an old villa she looks to remake along with her life. Each step in the process is filled with problems, humor, and delightful surprises on the path to fulfilling her wishes without realizing it.

I love Tuscany. It resembles the wine country of central California in many ways. Widescreen is the only way to see this movie. The visuals of the country side and charm of the old towns and villages is wonderful but a lot is lost in the smaller format. Iíve watched this film several times and continue to enjoy it. Itís lost on young kids but most adults will love it.  It's one of those movies that leave you with that joyous warm fuzzy feeling.

If you enjoy the movie, the memoir it was based on is wonderful! It's fairly different from the movie in that she doesn't purchase the farm house after a divorce nor does she get involved with the suave Italian. Instead she purchases and works on the farm with her husband (I guess Hollywood went for more drama).

The memoir is beautifully written, gives you the essence of Tuscany's landscape, people, and the cucina povera (poor cooking) of the region with recipes to boot! It makes you want to run away to Italy (if you don't already) to start an olive farm.
